Bettolino’s Delicious History of Pasta

A Letter From the Owners

With National Pasta Day making its scrumptious annual debut on October 15th, we thought we’d take the opportunity to share Bettolino’s history of pasta – and more!

Although we’ve been honored to serve the South Bay since the opening of our restaurant in 2015, our roots are four generations deep in the restaurant industry. Here’s how we came to make the best pasta in Redondo Beach!

Frances and Gaetano Giuliano opened their first store in Gardena in 1952

It All Started With Giuliano’s

Our family history in the restaurant business dates back to the 1950’s, when Andreanna’s great-grandparents Frances and Gaetano Giuliano opened the doors of Giuliano’s in Gardena. They wanted to bring the traditions of classic Italian food to Southern California through their fresh offerings, including what’s now the locally famous torpedo sandwich.

Over the years, they grew to offer more food, both freshly prepared and canned for home cooking, in stores across the region. With each store they opened, they continued to ensure that the food was just as affordable as it was delicious.

Today, the Giuliano’s location in Gardena is still open and the only one that employs a number of Giuliano descendants. However, this was just the spark for our love of the the local restaurant industry.

Next Came Gaetano’s

Andreanna’s father, Steve, spent his entire childhood helping out with his grandparents’ operation at Giuliano’s. While he took his work at the deli very seriously, his friends and family knew him to be the life of the party. He married Dori, also a descendent of an Italian family, and together they created Gaetano’s restaurant in Torrance in 1993.

The bold move of expanding their menu from just sandwiches to including pasta and more was a wild success. The restaurant was well loved in the South Bay, and was staffed by a number of family members. When Steve passed away, our family came together to help the restaurant move forward into a new generation of restauranteurship.

For decades, Gaetano’s did more than just feed our community. It brought people together, it supported local efforts, and it helped foster the love of the industry within Vince and Andreanna, Dori and Steve’s children. This love would eventually create Bettolino Kitchen in 2015.

Bettolino Kitchen Is a New Generation of Italian Cuisine

With so many renditions of Italian cuisine across Italian-American restaurants, we were excited to open up our kitchen to create a modern, California twist on some of our favorite classic dishes. Combining this with fresh and local ingredients, we quickly built our location to become a Redondo Beach hot spot for everything from casual brunches out with friends, to a place for birthday and anniversary celebrations.

Featuring our best-known handmade pastas, we love to update our menu with seasonal dishes that highlight ever-changing flavors and locally-sourced produce. Each day, we make fresh batches of pasta with simple ingredients.

Some pastas, like our Tortelloni al Limone, have been staples on our menu for years yet still taste as light and fresh as if it were just created yesterday. Others make a special debut to delight our guests for a few months before retiring from the menu. Either way, we always know that whichever handcrafted pasta delicacy our guests choose, they will be absolutely in love.

And, we never hide the process! Our Instagram is always featuring behind-the-scenes sneak peaks of how our kitchen team works their magic. We can’t promise that you won’t be drooling if you scroll through our feed.

We Invite You to Be Part of Our Tradition

The one thing that has never failed in our history in the South Bay is the support of our community. We are so grateful for those of you who have made memories around the table with us over the years.

If you haven’t already joined us for a meal, we hope that you’ll join our tradition of handmade pasta, love, and family the next time that you’re in Redondo Beach!
